Social Work Diversity and Community Engagement Scholarship

Amount: $500

Established by: This scholarship was established by Mikyong Kim-Goh and Francis Goh to recognize graduate students within the Department of Social Work who have demonstrated engagement and leadership in diverse communities. A student may only be awarded this scholarship once.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing enrolled students in the Department of Social Work who are pursuing a graduate degree. Both full-time and flex program students are eligible.

Criteria:

  • Students must have a GPA of 3.5 or above and be in good academic standing
  • Students must have completed at least 15 units toward their MSW degree for the full-time program or 9 units for the flex program
  • Evidence of ongoing commitment to complete their MSW degree
  • Campus or community involvement in diverse communities (e.g., ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, etc.)
  • 500-word essay describing personal experience in diverse communities and motivation to serve the underserved populations
  • A letter of support from the campus organization or community agency
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need through the application process
  • The Student Awards Committee will select the recipient and the scholarship will be awarded each year, beginning spring 2020 Application

  • Submit completed application and supporting documents to the Social Work Department Office in EC-207.

International Social Work Scholarship

Amount: $500

Established by: This scholarship was established by Mikyong Kim-Goh and Francis Goh to promote the engagement of graduate social work students in global service-learning and to facilitate their commitment to service, scholarship, and/or professional development in international settings. A student may only be awarded this scholarship once.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing enrolled students in the Department of Social Work who have been accepted to participate in the MSW Summer Global Service-Learning program. Both full-time and flex program students are eligible.

Criteria:

  • Students must have a GPA of 3.5 or above and in good academic standing
  • Students must have completed at least 15 units toward MSW degree for the full-time program or 9 units for the flex program
  • Evidence of ongoing commitment to complete MSW
  • 500-word essay describing your interest in and commitment to social work practice in international settings
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need through the application process
  • The Student Awards Committee will select the recipient and the scholarship will be awarded each year, beginning spring 2020 Application.

  • Submit completed application and supporting documents to the Social Work Department Office in EC-207.

Victoria Torok Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $1000 (Subject to funding)

Established by: This scholarship is established by the Social Work Department in honor and memory of Victoria Torok, an exemplary alumna of the MSW Program, who passed away.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing enrolled students in the Department of Social Work who are pursuing a graduate degree. Both full-time and flex program students are eligible.

Criteria:

  • Students must have a GPA of 3.2 or above and be in good academic standing
  • Evidence of ongoing commitment to complete MSW
  • Students must submit a letter of recommendation from the first year Field Instructor
  • Student must submit a 500 word statement demonstrating applicant’s commitment to social work values and ethics during their supervised field and volunteer experiences
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need through the application process (Cal-SWEC recipients not eligible)
  • A Student Awards Committee will select the recipient and the scholarship will be awarded each year, beginning spring 2020 Application.

Department of Social Work Titan Shops Scholarship

Amount: $300 (2 scholarships; Subject to funding)

Established by: This scholarship is funded by the Titan Shops Textbook Requisition Rewards Program established by the Titan Shops and administered by the Department of Social Work.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing enrolled students in the Department of Social Work who are pursuing a graduate degree. Both full-time and flex program students are eligible.

Criteria:

  • Students must have a GPA of 3.2 or above and be in good academic standing
  • Students must have completed 2 full semesters of the MSW program
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need through the application process (Cal-SWEC recipients not eligible)
  • A Student Awards Committee will select the recipient and the scholarship will be awarded each year, beginning spring 2020 Application.

  • Submit completed application and supporting documents to the Social Work Department Office in EC-207.

Application Deadline: March 2, 2020

Department of Social Work Field Education Award

Amount: $100

Established by: This award is established by the Social Work Department to recognize excellence in fieldwork.

Open to: This award is open to continuing enrolled students in the Department of Social Work who are expected to graduate in the spring of 2020. Both full-time and flex program students are eligible.

Nomination Criteria:

  • Student must be graduating in the spring of 2020
  • Student must have demonstrated excellence in fieldwork over the course of the program
  • Student is an active participant in their own learning
  • Student demonstrates initiative for professional growth and development
  • Student demonstrates resiliency when faced with unexpected challenges in the field

 

Nomination Procedure:

  • Field Directors will ask all Faculty Field Liaisons to nominate one student who exemplifies these criteria
  • Faculty Field Liaisons will submit a short written statement to the committee explaining how the nominated student meets the criteria for this award, along with the students Comprehensive Skills Evaluations for the two years of field work
  • The Student Awards Committee will select the final recipient of the award

David A. Cherin Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership

Amount: $100

Established by: This award is established by the Department of Social Work in honor of David A. Cherin. This award recognizes a graduating social work student who has demonstrated academic excellence and leadership.

Open to: This award is open to continuing enrolled students in the Department of Social Work who are expected to graduate in the spring of 2020. Both full-time and flex program students are eligible.

Nomination Criteria:

  • Student must be graduating in the spring of 2020
  • Student’s cumulative GPA at the time of graduation must fall within the top 5% of the graduating class.
  • The student must demonstrate leadership skills as evidenced by one or more of the following:
    • Participation as a team leader during Lobby Days
    • Demonstrating leadership in the classroom
    • Participation in MSWA in a leadership role or as an active member
    • Participation or leadership roles in other campus activities/organizations
    • Greater community involvement with organizations and agencies that reflect commitment to social justice and community development
    • Participation in community-based advocacy activities

 

Nomination Procedure:

  • A list of students who have earned GPAs falling within the top 5% of the graduating class will be circulated to faculty.
  • Each full-time faculty member will be encouraged to nominate one student from this list to be considered for this award.
  • Faculty will submit a short written statement to the committee explaining how the nominated student meets the criteria for this award.
