Program

• What is the structure of the M.S. in Kinesiology program?
  The M.S. in Kinesiology at CSUF is a 30-unit graduate program, and at least 21 units must be at the 500 level. Once admitted, each student must complete an advisor-approved study plan before completing 13 units in the program.
• Is the M.S. in Kinesiology a STEM-designated program?
  No. CSUF does not list the M.S. in Kinesiology as a STEM-designated program. Students with questions about OPT or STEM OPT eligibility should confirm details through CSUF International Student Services.
• How long does it take to complete the program?
  The program is designed for completion in two years. Students complete a 30-unit program of study and create an advisor-approved study plan that reflects their academic interests and chosen focus area. Actual time to degree may vary depending on course load and individual circumstances.
• Do students choose a focus area in the program?
  Yes. Students are expected to identify a main area of interest within the M.S. in Kinesiology. CSUF describes the program as offering specialized study in areas including Exercise Physiology; Sociocultural and Philosophical Aspects of Human Movement; Gerokinesiology; Pedagogy; Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology; Biomechanics; Strength and Conditioning; and Motor Behavior Students develop their study plan and elective coursework in consultation with faculty in their focus area.
• What are the culminating experience options?
  Students choose one of three culminating experience options: a Master’s Thesis, a Master’s Project, or a Comprehensive Examination. Students who select the Comprehensive Examination must complete one additional advisor-approved course in Kinesiology.
• What kinds of courses do students take beyond the core requirements?
  Beyond the core requirements, students complete elective graduate coursework that supports their chosen focus area. Elective coursework is selected in consultation with faculty within the student’s focus area. Please visit the Focus Area page for more information.

Teaching Associate

• What is a Teaching Associate Program?
  A teaching associate (TA) program gives M.S. in Kinesiology students an opportunity to gain hands-on teaching experience through the department’s Teaching Associate.
• Who is eligible for a teaching associate program?
  You must be fully accepted into the M.S. in Kinesiology program before the start of the semester. You should also have background experience in at least two activities commonly taught in the physical performance program.
• What are the responsibilities of a TA?
  You typically teach 2 or 3 one-unit sports/fitness classes and assist faculty 5 hours per week.
• Is a teaching associate program guaranteed for all students?
  No. The department reviews TA applications each semester and makes appointments based on available positions and teaching needs.
• Does a TA position include financial support?
  Yes. TA positions include a stipend of approximately $3,800 to $5,300 per semester, depending on teaching load.
• How do I apply for a teaching associate program?
  Submit a current resume, an application letter, and the course competency checklist. Submit these materials separately from your Cal State Apply application.

Application

• How do I apply to the program?
  Applicants must apply through Cal State Apply and complete all required sections of the application, including personal information, academic history, supporting information, and program materials.
• When is the application deadline?
  Applications are due on the last Friday of January.
• How can I check whether my application is complete?
  Applicants can monitor their application status through the Student Portal and should check their messages regularly for updates or additional requests. Please note that if there are any pending or incomplete tasks listed in the Student Portal, the application will not be reviewed until all tasks have been cleared.
• Do prerequisite courses need to be taken at CSUF?
  No. The prerequisite courses may be completed at other accredited institutions, including online courses, as long as they meet the stated requirements. Applicants who wish to complete prerequisites at CSUF may do so through Extended Education
• Can admission be deferred to a later term?
  No. Students are admitted only for the term to which they apply. If a student cannot begin in that term, they must submit a new application for a future term.
