Focus Area Overview

The Strength and Conditioning focus area prepares students for a career in strength and conditioning, including coaching, professional practice in the fitness, health, and wellness industry, research, and advanced study (i.e., doctoral programs). The focus area is for students who are interested in athletics, sport, and tactical/occupational performance, and will include advanced study in areas specific to strength and conditioning, while also providing opportunities for professional development through research, internships, and practical experience.

Highlight Research Topic Areas

Prominent research conducted within the strength and conditioning focus area includes analysis of different aspects of athletic performance, including strength and power training modalities, speed and agility, investigations of specific sports (e.g., soccer, basketball, softball), and recovery from exercise. Analysis of collegiate and high school athletes has been prominent research focus. Further, California State University, Fullerton is one of the leading institutions of tactical research and over a hundred studies investigating first response and military fitness, occupational performance, health and well-being, and career longevity have been published from the lab.

  • Two 500-level advanced courses, including:
    • KNES 551 - Advanced Study in Physiology of Exercise (required)
    • Plus one of the following:
      • KNES 561 - Advanced Study in Biomechanics
      • KNES 580 - Advanced Study in Sport and Exercise Psychology

Research Labs /Centers

Human Performance Laboratory (description needs to be updated on website)

The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) is dedicated to research related to aerobic and anaerobic capacity as it pertains to athletic, sport, and tactical/occupational performance. The laboratory is equipped with measurement devices such as heart rate monitors, linear position transducers, recovery devices, wearable technology, timing gates, and other assorted equipment. The purpose of the HPL is to investigate best practices for training while exploring the physiological mechanisms responsible for human neuromuscular adaptations. These include physiological, psychological, neural, and hypertrophic changes that enhance athletic performance. The athletic activities and sports commonly investigated analyzed in the HPL include basketball, football, soccer, softball, weightlifting, and powerlifting. Research involving emerging technology, such as training and recovery devices, is also conducted in the laboratory. There are opportunities to conduct research with athletes at all levels of sport (e.g., high school, college, recreational, and professionals).

The HPL is also heavily involved in first responder/tactical research. Studies have included fitness tracking of first responder recruits from pre- to post-academy training to document changes in physical fitness and predictors of injury; the analysis of physiological responses to training; investigating specific skills relating to occupational performance; analysis of the health, fitness, and well-being of incumbent personnel to encourage lifelong occupational performance and wellness; and training methods used to enhance health and physical fitness specific to tactical populations. This tactical research also involves collaboration with national and international partners. There are numerous opportunities for undergraduate and graduate student research with regards to tactical populations in the HPL.

My time as a CSUF Kinesiology Graduate student was positive, uplifting, and laid the foundation for my professional career and pursuit of a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences. Through various research opportunities, I was able to expand my research knowledge and experience by working with first responders (e.g., firefighters, law enforcement officers, military personnel), professional athletes, collegiate athletes, high school athletes, and elementary school students. By being involved in research, I was able to not only network with fellow graduate school professors and students, but with professionals who worked in various health and wellness occupations. Through this pool of networking, I was prepared to embrace job opportunities that found me when I did not expect them to, which has landed me today in a Tenured Track Faculty position at Santa Ana College. As an Assistant Professor in the Fire Technology Department, annually serving ~2,000 Southern California firefighters, I can genuinely say that my time in the Kinesiology Graduate Program at CSUF got me to where I am today, both professionally and academically. However, and most importantly, it gave me an opportunity to build lifelong friendships with fellow professors and students that I consider family today (a special shout out to my mate Dr. Lockie!).
