Testimonial

Melissa Rivera

My name is Melissa Rivera. I was the 2010 recipient of the Kimberly Perkins Scholarship award.  I am honored and humbled to be among the students who have received the Kimberly Perkins Scholarship award.  The scholarship means so much to me because it enabled me to continue my journey to become a teacher. For many years I took one or two classes a semester because that was all I could afford.  The year previous to winning the award I was working three jobs.  Unfortunately, I was laid off from two jobs and my savings began to dwindle. As the semester continued, I was unsure if I would have the money to cover the upcoming tuition.  Winning the scholarship helped me pay my tuition allowing me to continue my studies.  I am very grateful for the ability to complete my bachelor’s degree in May and then continue on to the teacher credential program in the Fall.  As I continue to journey toward my goal of becoming a teacher, I will remember Kimberly’s inspiring story.  I want to take the opportunity to, once again, recognize the great generosity of Kimberly’s parents, Rick and Nanci, and many of their friends and family who supported students like me through the Kimberly Perkins Scholarship fund. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage others to contribute to the fund, so we may continue to honor Kimberly’s memory by supporting students’ dedication to academic excellence.
