Scholarship Recipients

The Department of Counseling has the privilege of offering five different types of scholarships each year. Below are the descriptions of each and the recipients of the awards.

BROWN-BROADBENT SCHOLARSHIP

Amount:  $1000.00 (Fall)

Established by:  The Department of Counseling is pleased to announce an annual scholarship funded by Dr. Lee Broadbent who is an Emeritus faculty member at CSUF. His generous donation will provide scholarship money in the amount of $1000.00 each year for students who are enrolled in practicum. Preference is given to students working in a higher education setting (at CSUF or other colleges and universities); first generation college students; and single parents.

Criteria:  The student must demonstrate financial hardship. The student demonstrates commitment to improving the quality of life for children and/or adults in the community. Students with undocumented status are invited to apply. The student must demonstrate academic achievement: with a minimum 3.5 GPA in graduate level classes, with all grades at a minimum of B or higher, and cannot have any outstanding incompletes. The student must be enrolled in the Department of Counseling and intends to seek the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) credential and/or the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) credential. The student must be an active member in the Graduate Counseling Student Association (GCSA). The student must be enrolled in the practicum series (530, 584, 590, or 591) during the application period. Recipients of the scholarship will be meeting in person with the benefactor upon award. Students who do not win the scholarship are allowed to reapply, assuming they still meet the criteria in the next cycle. Students can earn this scholarship only once.

Application Procedure:  Eligible students are invited to submit a letter indicating how they qualify for the scholarship using the above criteria as well as indicating their level of need and how this scholarship money might be used. Students should also include if they have applied for other scholarships during the Counseling program and how many scholarships were received with amounts awarded. Information about the student’s practicum site should be included: site name, name of individual supervisor, and supervisor’s phone number and email address. A copy of the most recent unofficial transcript showing GPA should also be included. Finally, students should include a letter of recommendation from a practicum supervisor addressing the relevant criteria above and professional promise for the student. DR. CHARLES W. BUCK SCHOLARSHIP IN COUNSELING

Amount:  $1000.00 (Spring)

Established by:  The Department of Counseling is pleased to offer an annual scholarship funded by Dr. Charles W. Buck. Dr. Buck served as director of the CSUF counseling center for a decade, beginning in 1966 and into the 1970’s. His generous donation will provide scholarship money in the amount of $1,000.00 for students who are enrolled in the Department of Counseling.

Criteria:  The student must be enrolled in the Department of Counseling and intends to seek the LPCC or LMFT credential. The student must demonstrate financial hardship. Students with undocumented status are invited to apply. The student demonstrates commitment to improving the quality of life and mental health of children, youth, and/or adults in the community. The students must hold a GPA of 3.25 in graduate level classes, with all grades at a minimum B or higher and cannot have any outstanding incompletes. Students who have been awarded this scholarship in the past or the Brown-Broadbent scholarship are not able to apply.

Application Procedure:  Eligible students are invited to submit a letter indicating how they qualify for the scholarship using the above criteria as well as indicating their level of need and how this scholarship money might be used. Students should also include if they have applied for other scholarships during the Counseling program and how many scholarships were received with amounts awarded. Application Deadline:  Last Friday in March

TITAN BOOKSTORE SCHOLARSHIP

Amount:  To be determined by the Titan Shops’ at the start of the semester. (Fall)

Established by:  The Titan Shops’ This scholarship is intended to benefit students who have demonstrated strong academic performance and who are experiencing current significant financial distress.

Criteria:  3.3 GPA, minimum of 12 units completed in Counseling Department, no incompletes in any class, no grades lower than a B- in any class, current financial hardship, you did not previously receive a Counseling department scholarship.

Application Procedure:  Interested students please submit: A letter (no more than 2 pages) describing your financial situation and how you would use the scholarship money if awarded to you. Complete and sign the Declaration form and submit with your application. A two-page essay in which you describe how being in the counseling program has impacted you as a person. Submit applications including letter, declaration form, and essay to Olga Mejia,   omejia@fullerton.edu

Application Deadline:  Last Friday in October 

JACI AND DARRYL SCHOEN TEXTBOOK SCHOLARSHIP

Amount:  $200.00 (Fall); $200.00 (Spring); $200.00 (Summer)

Established by:  The Department of Counseling is pleased to announce a scholarship awarded once per semester funded by Jaci Schoen MS LMFT (CSUF Counseling, 2012) and Darryl Schoen. Their generous donation will provide scholarship money toward the purchase of textbooks in the amount of $200.00 for students who are enrolled in the Department of Counseling.

Criteria:  The student must be enrolled in the Department of Counseling and intends to seek the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) credential and/or the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) credential. The student may apply after they have completed their first semester. The student must demonstrate financial hardship. Considerations for applicants are: diverse race and ethnicities, inclusive of all gender, sexual and romantic orientations, first generation college students, and students with undocumented status. The student must demonstrate academic achievement: with a minimum 3.25 GPA in graduate level classes, and cannot have any outstanding incompletes. The student demonstrates commitment to improving the quality of life for children and/or adults in the community. Students who have been awarded another Department scholarship in the past are not eligible to apply. 

Application Procedure:  Eligible students are invited to submit a letter indicating how they qualify for the scholarship using the above criteria as well as indicating their level of need and how this scholarship money might be used. Please include a copy of the most recent unofficial transcript showing GPA. Please send your letter and unofficial transcript to: Olga Mejia (omejia@fullerton.edu).

THE EMPOWERMENT SCHOLARSHIP

Amount:  $1000.00 (two scholarships awarded at $1000.00 each) (Fall)

Established by:  The Department of Counseling is pleased to offer a new scholarship, The Empowerment Scholarship in Counseling, funded by CSUF Counseling Alum Mark Myran. His generous donation will provide two (2) Scholarships of $1000.00 each.

Criteria:  The student must be enrolled in the Department of Counseling and intends to seek the LPCC or LMFT credential. The student must demonstrate financial hardship. Students with undocumented status and/or are bilingual in any language are invited to apply. The student demonstrates a social justice commitment to improving the quality of life and mental health of children, youth, and/or adults in the community. The student must hold a GPA of 3.25 in graduate level classes, with all grades at a minimum B or higher and cannot have any outstanding incompletes. Students who have been awarded a Counseling scholarship in the past are not eligible to apply.

Application Procedure:  Eligible students are invited to submit a 2-3 page letter indicating how they qualify for the scholarship using the above criteria as well as indicating their level of need and how this scholarship money might be used. Students should also include if they have applied for other scholarships (departmental, college, or university) during the Counseling program and how many scholarships were received with amounts awarded. A copy of the most recent unofficial transcript showing GPA should also be included. Please send your letter and unofficial transcript to Olga Mejia,  omejia@fullerton.edu
