Dr. Joshua Yang received his MPH and PhD in Community Health Sciences (with a minor in Sociology) from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Public Health.  He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, University of California, San Francisco. As a postdoctoral fellow, his work included an examination of tobacco industry corporate social responsibility efforts, U.S. policy coherence in tobacco control, and the strategies used by transnational tobacco companies to promote smoking in developing countries such as Pakistan.  He continues his work in the area of global health governance related to non-communicable disease. Dr. Yang has worked with the World Health Organization, Ministry of Health of Egypt, and other local organizations.

Interest Area:
Global governance of non-communicable diseases, with an emphasis on:

  1. International institutions
  2. Interface of commercial and public health interests
  3. U.S. foreign policy

Current projects:

  • Examination of historical regulatory efforts over transnational corporation in the OECD
  • Understanding the effects of the United Nations High-Level Meeting on NCDs on global governance of non-communicable diseases
  • Analysis of the implications of corporate social responsibility for global non-communicable disease governance.
  • Detailing the relationship between U.S. health and foreign policy and global health governance
