Jorge Rodriguez, MPH (Class of 2024)

2024 Outstanding Graduate Public Health Student

Throughout my two years at the Masters of Public Health Program at CSU Fullerton, I got to experience and learn a lot of different things. I worked as a research assistant for Dr. Nobari since September 2022 where I got to work in an interdisciplinary project to develop smart technologies for residents of permanent supportive housing. Within this position I got to preform numerous literature reviews for background research to the development of these technologies, develop a survey for the permanent supportive housing residents about their phone usage, use of telehealth, and other subjects. Additionally, I was involved in the statistical analysis and dissemination of results of the surveys to aid in the direction the project would go based on the best interests of the target population. As part of my MPH internship, I got to work with Koreatown Youth & Community Center as a Prevention Assistant under Prevention Specialist Deisy Guiterrez. I worked with KYCC from January 2023 to July 2023. I was primarily involved in the education and awareness campaigns for prevention of substance abuse and misuse and helped develop the Spanish curriculum for a parent life skills training course where once a week, I would help present courses in which parents would get to learn life skills on like how to help with their child’s stress and anxieties, how to communicate with their child during adolescents and how to help their child deal with bad influences and bullies among other topics. I also got to facilitate events that parents ran that promoted a drug free community in Koreatown and aided in writing informational newsletters about relevant legislature that was disseminated to coalition partners at the Coalition for Prevention and Awareness in LA Metro.

I was also fortunate enough to be one of eighty public health students in California to be selected as an intern for the California Department of Public Health in August 2023. I am still working with Tracy Lainer, an Infection Preventionist, as a Student Intern for the Healthcare-Associated Infections Program under the Center for Health Care Quality. I have been involved the in development of courses that vary from microbiology to disinfection practices in healthcare and I have been directly involved in the design, narration, and audio quality of these courses. Additionally, I have been involved in providing assessments for healthcare facilities and clinics where I got to visit a facility and clinic and conduct assessments on common practices done using best practice tools which then resulted in a recommendation for either health professionals or place. I also got to do quantitative research with Dr. Mamudu as part of my Integrated Learning Experience for the MPH program. I started working with Dr. Mamudu since September 2023 in an ongoing project to investigate the association of health status and depression among the Hispanic population in the United States. I have been able to utilize skills learned though my MPH classes involving SPSS to download, clean, manage and merge data to get the desired variables and make an analysis. Currently ongoing is a research report where the project will be detailed. Additionally, I have been fortunate enough to present my research through the 4th Annual HHD Student Research Showcase where I produced a poster and presented in person, and the 3rd CSUF ESG Annual Public Health Symposium where I produced a presentation and presented virtually.
