Help Children Affected by Puerto Rico’s Hurricane Disaster

Teachers from the University of Puerto Rico Preschool CenterHurricanes, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis. We know how scary these events feel as adults, but how do they affect the very young? Research shows that disasters have a significant effect on the health and emotional well-being of children.

HHD associate professor Dr. Shu-Chen "Jenny" Yen uses the power of storytelling to help children impacted by natural disasters find the courage to move forward. Dr. Yen created her first children’s book in response to the 9-11 terrorist attacks. She has since authored stories for young survivors affected by natural disasters in Taiwan, China, and the Philippines.

Dr. Yen’s latest “social story” is helping build resiliency in children affected by 2017’s Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Many children lost their parents, homes, and schools in the aftermath of the island’s largest natural disaster since 1928.

With your support, Dr. Yen’s book can reach more children in Puerto Rico.

Your donation of any amount will help print and ship 2,000 English and Spanish-language books to children in need. Thanks to a generous donation fromApplied Optoelectronics Inc., Dr. Yen needs just$3,000 to complete the shipment.
