Admission Requirements

Graduate degree applicants must meet the all-university requirements for admission, which include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 in the last 60 semester units attempted.  To be further admitted into the Kinesiology master's program, students must also:

(1) have an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology (or equivalent field) with a GPA of at least 3.2 in upper division major coursework;

(2) complete the Graduate Record Exam general test with recommended scores in all areas at or approximating the 50th percentile (usually around 150 for Verbal Reasoning, 142 for Quantitative Reasoning, and 3.5 for Analytical Writing).

*The GRE requirement has been waived for the fall 2024 application cycle. In lieu of a GRE score, please complete and file attached to this email when prompted to upload an official GRE report in Cal State Apply

(3) submit a 500-word essay describing academic and professional interests; and

(4) submit a minimum of two letters of recommendation, preferably from tenure-track faculty.

Students without an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology (or equivalent field) will be required to complete a prescribed set of prerequisite courses (15 units) with a GPA of at least 3.2. It is strongly recommended approval be obtained for coursework from the graduate advisor before registering for courses.  Any student with a GPA deficiency must take additional coursework, as specified by the Kinesiology Graduate Studies Coordinator.
