Dr. Espinoza received her B.A. in psychology from San Diego State University and her Ph.D. in developmental psychology at UCLA with minors in Culture, Ethnicity and Education, and Quantitative Methods. As a graduate student she was a Ford Foundation Pre-doctoral Fellow and also received a National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Child and Human Development. She is currently the representative of the Equality and Justice Committee for the SRCD Student and Early Career Council.
Dr. Espinoza is interested in how adolescents’ school context perceptions (e.g., school climate, safety) and peer relationships (e.g., bullying) shape their psychosocial and school adjustment. Much of Dr. Espinoza’s research focuses specifically on the experiences of adolescents from Latin American backgrounds. Her recent research examined how daily cyberbullying experiences are associated with Latino adolescents’ psychosocial, physical and school adjustment and relied on daily diary methods. Dr. Espinoza is also interested in better understanding adolescents use of online communication tools (e.g., use of social networking sites such as Facebook to communicate with peers).
