THE GERIATRIC SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION CONSORTIUM (GSWEC)

The Geriatric Social Work Education Consortium (GSWEC) is the nation’s first integrated regional network dedicated to improving  geriatric social work education and field training . It aims to prepare social workers to specialize in aging and become leaders in the field.

Purpose

The purpose of the GSWEC program is to strengthen the geriatric social work workforce by providing MSW students with:

  • Advanced training in aging services and geriatric competencies

  • Field placements in community agencies that serve older adults

  • Opportunities to develop leadership and clinical skills specific to aging populations

Ultimately, the GSWEC stipends gives the opportunity to increase the number of social workers prepared to be leaders in the field of aging.

What the Program Offers

  • Stipend-Supported Internships: Selected students receive a stipend while completing a geriatric-focused field placement.
  • Competency-Based Training: Coursework and hands-on experience that build specialized skills in aging, caregiving, health systems, and long-term care.
  • Collaborative Learning Environment: Students train within a network of universities and agencies dedicated to improving services for older adults.
  • Second-Year Placement Opportunity: Open to MSW students completing their advanced-year internship within the Aging concentration.

Eligibility & Application

  • Students must declare the Aging concentration in the MSW program.

  • Applications are submitted during the spring semester prior to the second-year field placement.

  • Selection is competitive and considers academic performance, demonstrated interest in serving older adults, and fit for participating agencies.
