Program Overview

2 YEAR MSW PROGRAM 

The two-year MSW program is administered by the Department of Social Work and delivered on Fullerton’s main campus. 

Students complete 60-semester units of coursework. Students enroll in 15 units of coursework (5 courses total) each semester for four (4) semesters. Students attend class on 2 to 3 weekdays. 

Each student completes two fieldwork placements: one in the first year and one in the second year. Each placement involves 525 hours of fieldwork. Students complete 16-20 hours of field placement each week between the months of August and May. Field hours are completed on weekdays opposite of the student’s class schedule. 

 

 

MSW FLEX PROGRAM 

The three-year MSW flex program is administered through Extension and International Programs, formerly University Extended Education, and is delivered at CSUF's main campus. 

Students complete 60-semester units of coursework. Students enroll in 9 units of coursework each semester for 6 semesters, plus one summer course. Students attend class on 2 to 3 weekday evenings. 

Each student completes two fieldwork placements: one in the second year and one in the third year. Each placement involves 525 hours of fieldwork. Students complete 16-20 hours of field placement each week between the months of August and May. Field hours are completed during agency hours, typically two days during the week. 

The MSW flex program is subject to all the fee and registration requirements of Extension and International Programs.

AREAS OF FOCUS

Child Welfare

Focus on preparing students to promote and empower children and their families safety, permanency and their well-being in public and private child welfare agencies settings including welfare/protective services, health care, mental health, public social services, schools, community-based outpatient agencies, corrections/juvenile justice, residential treatment, programs for persons with developmental disabilities, domestic violence shelters and other specialized programs. 

Community Mental Health 

Focus on preparing students to work with various client populations across the mental health care system, including children, families, adults, and older adults. 

Aging * 

Focus on preparing students to become Gerontological social workers, helping older adults and their families maintain well-being, overcome problems and achieve maximum potential during later life. A key function of a gerontological social worker is to promote independence, dignity, and autonomy.
