Prior to returning to work on his MSW and PhD, Doctor Cherin was an administrator and corporate vice president for over two decades with a large, multi-national health care management company.  Since entering the field of social work, Dr. Cherin has held faculty positions in the Schools of Social Work at California State University, Long Beach; California State University, Bakersfield;  the University of Southern California; and University of Washington.  He has done extensive research, evaluation work and publishing in the areas of health care service delivery and child welfare.  His work in health services focuses on service delivery systems in end-of-life care.  He has received the Soros Project Death in America’s Social Work Leadership Award.

Christine A. Ford, Lecturer, Director of Field Education

Christine A. Ford, MSW, BSN, LCSW, RN is Director of Field Education.  Ms. Ford earned her MSW at CSU, Long Beach in 1991 and became Licensed in California in 1994.  Before coming to Cal State Fullerton, Ms. Ford worked for the County of Orange in the Social Services Agency from 1991 to 1997 and the Health Care Agency from 1997 to 2007.  Ms. Ford worked in both the Child Welfare and Community Mental Health programs and became a supervisor of County Mental Health clinics.  She has been active in NASW since 1990, has served on the Board of Directors, committees and councils.  She was awarded the Daniel E. Koshland Award for Outstanding Practitioner by NASW in 1997 and the Spotlight on Excellence Award by HCA Cultural Competency and Multi-Ethnic Services in 2003. 

Dr. Mikyong Kim-Goh, Professor

Dr. Kim-Goh is Professor in the Master of Social Work program and former chair of the Department of Human Services at California State University, Fullerton. Dr. Kim-Goh has taught a wide range of courses including Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Techniques of Social Work, Case Management, Theories and Techniques of Counseling, Fieldwork, Korean American Experience, and Human Services for Immigrants and Refugees. Her research interests include interpersonal violence and mental health, service-learning in higher education, mental health delivery in ethnic minority communities, and immigrant and refugee issues. Dr. Kim-Goh has published numerous papers in scholarly journals, such as the Community Mental Health Journal and American Journal of Orthopsychiatry. She was a Co-Principal Investigator of a $750,000 youth violence prevention project that was funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in California, Dr. Kim-Goh has served on the Orange County Mental Health Board and is a recipient of 2007 Distinguished Faculty Award from the College of Health and Human Development at Cal State Fullerton.

Dr. Sean R. Hogan, Assistant Professor

Currently, Dr. Hogan teaches courses in substance abuse and research methods. Prior to coming to Cal State Fullerton, he taught courses in the Schools of Social Welfare at U.C., Berkeley, and San Jose State University.  These courses included Introduction to Social Work; Social Welfare Policy and Services; Social Policy Analysis; Research Methods and Design; Research Methods, Data Analysis and Evaluation; and Social Work as a Profession. Dr. Hogan’s research areas include substance abuse, welfare reform, and the effects of eliminating welfare benefits to low-income substance abusers.  He has presented nationally at the annual conferences of the Society for Social Work and Research and the Council on Social Work Education. He has reviewed books for the Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare and is currently publishing in the areas of social welfare policy and substance abuse.

Dr. David Chenot, Assistant Professor, CalSWEC Project Coordinator

David Chenot is Assistant Professor and Project Coordinator of the CalSWEC programs in the Department of Social Work. He earned a Master of Divinity at Fuller Theological Seminary and a Master of Social Work at California State University, Fresno. David completed a Doctorate in Social Welfare at Case Western Reserve University (The Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences). His past academic appointments have been at California State University, Bakersfield, where he served for seven years as both an instructor and the CalSWEC Project Coordinator in the MSW program. David is also an LCSW in the State of California and practiced professional social work in both public child welfare services and public mental health for many years. His research interests include: the retention of social workers in public child welfare services, resilience among vulnerable children and families, and spirituality, religion and social work.

Caroline Bailey, Assistant Professor

Dr. Bailey is Assistant Professor of Social Work at California State University, Fullerton and is also an Assistant Research Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles in the department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  A graduate of the University of Southern California, Dr. Bailey completed graduate training in both developmental psychology and child clinical psychology in 2004. Her clinical internship and post-doctoral fellowship were completed at UCLA’s prestigious Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital where she specialized in working with children and adolescents with neurobehavioral disorders.  As a post doctoral fellow with UCLA”s Mental Retardation Research Center, Dr. Bailey conducted several studies investigating reading and language development in children with epilepsy and schizophrenia.  Dr. Bailey is the recipient of several honors and awards.  While at USC, she was awarded the Valentine Dissertation Fellowship, and is a Neurobehavioral Fellow of the American Epilepsy Society.  She is certified in the Slingerland method of reading instruction and is an active member of the International Dyslexia Association as well as the Association for Psychological Science. 

Hansung Kim, Assistant Professor

Dr. Kim joined the Cal State Fullerton Social Work Program in 2008.  He received his doctoral from USC in May of 2008, an MSW from Michigan State University and a BA in Social Work from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Kim’s teaching interest include policy and practices in social service organizations, nonprofit management, leadership in the social work profession, social work practice in industrial settings, social work research, and advanced statistical methods.  His research includes areas of public child welfare and A Longitudinal Study of Job Stress, Health Turnover among California-registered Social Workers.  He was the principal investigator for a project to identify organizational factors to reducing physical and mental health problems among service providers.  Published in Administration in Social Work, Social Work in Health Care,  the Korean Journal of Communication Science, and Aging International, Dr. Kim has continued interest in the areas of child welfare, human service management, occupational health and social work practices, and measurement development and evaluation.  In the Fall of 2008, he will be teaching Policy and Social Work and Project Development to the advanced Social Work students. 

Debra D. Saxton, Lecturer

Debra Saxton began her full-time position with the Cal State Fullerton Social Work program in 2008.  She is a licensed clinical social worker, with an MSW from USC and a BA in Sociology from Cal State Fullerton.  Her teaching experience includes work as a part-time lecturer at Cal State Fullerton and at Whittier College. Ms. Saxton has also been a parenting instructor with the Montebello Unified School District and an In-service Lecturer for the Hacienda/La Puente and Santa Fe Springs Unified School Districts.  In addition to her teaching experience, Ms. Saxton has worked with Intercommunity Child Guidance and Newport Psychcare as Therapist.  She has done research in attachment theory, the effects of trauma on development, resilience theory, as well as the impact of early socialization on resiliency in later life.  Ms. Saxton will be teaching the Field Seminars for the Social Work program in Fall 2008 in addition to an advanced practice class to our Child Welfare concentration students.
