MSW Program Fact Sheet
Department Philosophy
- Our goal is to prepare students to enter professional, multicultural social work practice. Curriculum focused on public child welfare and community mental health.
- Dual emphases on the individual in social context and the betterment of society.
Admissions Criteria
- Fall admission only
- Bachelor’s degree
- Prerequisite require meeting CSU / UC Liberal Studies & Social Sciences background. Click here for more information.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 for the last 60 units.
- Supplemental statement
- Three letters of recommendation
- Interview with admission committee
- Minimum 1 year of paid or volunteer experience in human services field
- Writing Sample
Instructional Modes
- Application of ecological systems model
- Focus on cultural competency, advocacy, and social justice
- Fieldwork in child welfare or community mental health agency
- Courses in social welfare policy and practice
Length of Program
Class Schedules
- Full-time only
- Typically, the student will spend two days per week on campus and two to two and a half days per week off campus in a Field Agency.
Accreditation
- The Social Work Program is in Candidacy for Accreditation, as of February 2008, by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)

Prerequisites:
Applicants applying for admission to the MSW program must have a liberal arts foundation of study. The purpose of the liberal arts perspective is to prepare students for problem solving of the real world practice challenges that they will find in their fieldwork and throughout their social work career.
If you have a bachelor’s degree from either the University of California or the California State University systems, you meet the liberal arts requirement.
