Scholarship Recipients

The Department of Counseling has the privilege of offering five different types of scholarships each year. Below are the descriptions of each and the recipients of the awards.

BROADBENT & BROWNING SCHOLARSHIP

Amount:  $1500 - $2000 (subject to funding) (Fall)

Established by: The Department of Counseling is pleased to announce an annual scholarship funded by Dr. Lee Broadbent, Emeritus faculty at CSUF. His generous donation will provide scholarship money each year for MS COUN students enrolled in practicum. Preference is given to students working in a higher education setting (at CSUF or other colleges and universities); first generation college students; and single parents.

Criteria: All students enrolled in the MS COUN program are eligible to apply. The student must demonstrate financial hardship; a commitment to improving the quality of life for children and/or adults in the community; academic achievement with a minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA in all graduate level coursework, all grades at a minimum of B or higher, and no outstanding incomplete grades. The student should demonstrate intention to seek the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) credential and/or the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) credential. The student must be an active member in the Graduate Counseling Student Association (GCSA) and enrolled in the practicum series (530, 584, 590, or 591) during the scholarship application period.

Recipients of the scholarship should expect to meet with the benefactor upon award. Applicants who are not awarded the scholarship are allowed to reapply in the next cycle. Students can receive this scholarship only once.

Application Procedure: Eligible students are invited to submit a letter describing their qualifications based on the above criteria as well as indicating their level of need and how this scholarship money might be used. Students should also include if they have applied for other scholarships during the Counseling program and how many scholarships were received with amounts awarded. Information about the student’s practicum site should be included: site name, name of individual supervisor, and supervisor’s phone number and email address. A copy of the most recent unofficial transcript showing GPA should also be included. Application letter and unofficial transcript should be sent to: David Hart, dhart@fullerton.edu.

Finally, applicants should include a letter of recommendation from a practicum supervisor addressing the relevant criteria above and professional promise for the student. The practicum supervisor letter of recommendation should be emailed directly from the supervisor to: David Hart, dhart@fullerton.edu. DR. CHARLES W. BUCK SCHOLARSHIP IN COUNSELING

Amount:  $1000 (Spring)

Established by: T he Department of Counseling is pleased to offer an annual scholarship funded by Dr. Charles W. Buck. Dr. Buck served as director of the CSUF counseling center for a decade, beginning in 1966 and into the 1970’s. His generous donation will provide scholarship money in the amount of $1,000.00 for students who are enrolled in the Department of Counseling.

Criteria: All students enrolled in the MS COUN program are eligible to apply. The student should demonstrate: intention to seek the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) credential and/or the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) credential; financial hardship; a commitment to improving the quality of life for children, youth, and/or adults in the community; academic achievement with a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA in all graduate level coursework, all grades at a minimum of B or higher, and no outstanding incomplete grades. Students who have been awarded this scholarship or the Broadbent & Browning Scholarship in the past are not eligible to apply. Applicants who are not awarded the scholarship are allowed to reapply in the next cycle.

TITAN SHOPS SCHOLARSHIP

Amount:  To be determined by the Titan Shops’ at the start of the semester. (Fall)

Established by: The Titan Shops’; this scholarship is intended to benefit students who have demonstrated strong academic performance and who are experiencing current significant financial distress.

Criteria: All students that have completed a minimum of 12 units in the MS COUN program are eligible to apply. The student must demonstrate current financial hardship; academic achievement with a minimum cumulative 3.3 GPA in all graduate level coursework, no grades lower than a B-; and no outstanding incomplete grades. Students who have been awarded another Department of Counseling scholarship in the past are not eligible to apply. Applicants who are not awarded the scholarship are allowed to reapply in the next cycle.

Application Procedure: Eligible students should submit a letter (no more than 2 pages) describing their qualifications based on the above criteria as well as indicating their level of need and how this scholarship money might be used. Complete and sign the Declaration form and submit with your application. In addition, a two-page essay in which you describe how being in the counseling program has impacted you as a person. JACI AND DARRYL SCHOEN TEXTBOOK SCHOLARSHIP

Amount:  $200 (Fall); $200 (Spring); $200 (Summer)

Established by: The Department of Counseling is pleased to announce a scholarship awarded once per semester, funded by Jaci Schoen MS LMFT (CSUF Counseling, 2012) and Darryl Schoen. Their generous donation will provide scholarship money toward the purchase of textbooks in the amount of $200 for students who are enrolled in the MS COUN Program.

Criteria: All students that have completed their first semester in the MS COUN program are eligible to apply. The student must demonstrate financial hardship; intention to seek the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) credential and/or the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) credential; and academic achievement with a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA in all graduate level coursework and no outstanding incomplete grades.
